KOCHI: The Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET), a scientific institute under the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has designed and developed an emergency lamp which can be fully charged in less than two minutes.

Commercially available emergency lamps work on the battery which requires minimum three hours to get fully charged. Use of graphene-based supercapacitor, instead of the battery, ensures more life for the storage system of the lamp. It can be directly charged from the power supply in one or two minutes and provide light for up to 30-60 minutes. Another attractive feature of the lamp is its excellent power efficiency coupled with long operating life. This can also be charged from solar power also. C-MET has filed an Indian patent application for this technology, according to a communique from C-MET.

According to A Seema, the scientist who invented the device, this is a totally indigenous technology development and it has contributed to Skill India, Start-up India, Stand-up India and ‘Make in India’ programmes of the Central Government.
