KOCHI:A group of passengers at Ernakulam South Railway Station rescued a child who was found begging. The passengers dialled the Childline helpline 1098. The child was later handed over to the Childline authorities. This was the storyline of the street play staged by the students of Bharat Matha College on Tuesday at platform number 1 of the Ernakulam South Railway Station as part of the International Anti-child Labour Day observance.
The programme was organised by the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare and District Child Welfare unit in association with the District Legal Service Authority, Childline and the Railways. After the street play, station director Harikrishnan signed the signature board that had been placed at the railway station as part of the observance.
The meeting that followed was presided over by District Child Protection Officer Saina K B. Station manager Rohit, Childline coordinator Jithin, Railway Child Help Desk Sahrudaya assistant director Fr David Padannakadan and St Albert’s College assistant professor Aiswarya signed the declaration, besides expressing their felicitations.
A flash mob was also conducted as part of the programme by the students of St Albert’s College. Various initiatives have been launched to make Ernakulam district free of child labour.
