KOCHI: The UDF-led Kochi corporation has decided to seek a vigilance inquiry into the alleged irregularities in G Smarakam, built in memory of great poet G Sankarakurup during the LDF term.
The 5,000 square-feet monument was constructed spending `5 crore and was inaugurated in 2024 by then chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Even after inauguration, no programmes were conducted at the memorial and it remains unused due to safety aspects.
The entire memorial building tilted towards the backside following the piling work for the construction of a PWD building in the nearby plot, raising safety concerns.
“There are so many drawbacks in its construction. What is the purpose of an open gallery here when it rains almost six months. From lighting facilities to various aspects of the construction, this project can only be considered as a white elephant,” said a UDF councillor, adding that only a vigilance inquiry could bring to light the irregularities behind the building which was built by spending `5 crore.
