KOLKATA: Suspected Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terror operative and fake note kingpin Ripon Sheikh alias Liton, wanted by the NIA and by security agencies in 14 states of the country, was nabbed by the Border Security Force near the Indo-Bangladesh international border in Malda district of West Bengal while he was trying to cross over to India on Friday night.
The fake note kingpin has been handed over to the National Investigative Agency (NIA) for further questioning into his alleged involvement in the Holey Artisan cafe attack in Dhaka and the Kaliachak
riots early in 2016 where hardline Islamists burnt several houses, shops and Kaliachak police station which had important details about the opium cultivation in the border areas of the Malda district in West Bengal. Investigation into the incident also revealed that the opium smugglers from Bangladesh wanted to burn the hardcopy evidences collected against them in the Kaliachak police station under the garb of the riots.
Sources revealed that the accused had fled Bangladesh after Holey artisan attack mastermind Nurul Islam (22) alias Marjan along with his accomplice Saddam (accused in 10 murders including of Japanese national Hoshi Kunio in Rangpur in October 2015) were killed in an encounter with Counter-terrorism and Transnational Crime unit in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur on Thursday night.
It has come to fore that Liton used to frequently change his name in his attempt to evade arrests by sleuths of counter-terror units of Bangladesh.
