THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan has hit out strongly against Tamil Nadu Opposition leader J Jayalalithaa who had equated Kerala’s demand for a new dam at Mullaperiyar to China’s attempt to construct a new dam on the Brahmaputra.

“We have been given permission only for a preliminary survey and it is for this that Jayalalithaa is making noises. She had disappeared after her loss at the hustings and now she is trying to show off by holding up the Mullaperiyar issue,” Achuthanandan told reporters here on Monday.

“When Jayalalithaa is making such noises, the Chief Minister (Karunanidhi), it seems, cannot sit quiet,’’ Achuthanandan said.

The attitude of both the leaders is a betrayal of the people of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the Chief Minister said. “I am sure they will rectify their ways. I am sure they will come around to Kerala’s point of view,” he added.

This is the second time that Achuthanandan had ridiculed both Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi in this manner.

Earlier, while releasing a letter on the issue to the Prime Minister on October 17, Achuthanandan had said that Jayalalithaa was trying to use Mullaperiyar as a comeback card and that Karunanidhi was forced to put on a show of defiance because of Jayalalithaa.
