The DYFI leadership has condemned the attack on writer Paul Zachariah allegedly by a section of DYFI activists at Payyannur on Saturday.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the DYFI State Conference here on Sunday, DYFI state president M B Rajesh MP said that though the party did not accept the stand of Zachariah on the Rajmohan Unnithan issue, the attack could not be justified.
He also said that it was not proper to blame the DYFI for the attack on Rajmohan Unnithan by a group of people.
The DYFI would be conducting an enquiry into the Payyannur incident after the State Conference and appropriate action will be taken if any DYFI activist involved in it, he said.
CM promises action
Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said that a proper inquiry would be conducted into the attack on writer Paul Zachariah at Payyanur on Sunday.
The Chief Minister spoke to Zachariah over telephone and enquired about the incident. The CM said that stern action would be taken against those involved in the incident.
'Attack on democracy'
A group of social and cultural activists in the state have condemned the attack on Paul Zachariah.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, Sachidanandan, K.N.Panicker, K.G. Sankarapillai and others said that the attack on Zachariah was as an attack on freedom of expression and democracy. In a healthy democratic set-up, the political parties which believe in democracy should condemn such incidents and tender apology, they said.

The pro-CPM Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham on Sunday condemned the manhandling of writer Paul Zachariah.
The declared aim of progressive forces was to fight regressive writings and ideas through progressive works and ideas, PUKASA general secretary Prof V.N. Murali said in a statement. Other than this, personal attacks from any side have to be condemned, he said
