THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 42-km stretch of road, which comes under the Thiruvananthapuram City Road Improvement Project (TCRIP), will adorn a new look within four to five days. Based on the instruction given by PWD Minister T M Thomas Isaac to make the roads temporarily suitable for travel, the officials are in a hurry to fill potholes.
Project Engineer of the Road Fund Board Sreekandan Nair said that under the current works, one layer of tarring will be done after filling the potholes. The Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL) is executing the works.
“We have co-ordinated with various departments to make the roads temporarily suitable for travel. These are just temporary works. Except the Thakaraparambu flyover and the bus stand at East Fort, all other major TCRIP works will be completed within six to seven months,” he said.
The TRDCL is filling potholes on the 1.433-km road from Peroorkada to Vazhayila. The road, which needs extensive patchwork, is expected to be ready within three days.
The Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam road is ready after tarring work. However, both the Sasthamangalam and Vellayambalam junctions are still waterlogged as the works there have not started. The Road Fund Board has issued directions for immediate repair of the junctions. These junctions are expected to get ready within three days.
The MG Road, from LMS to Attakkulangara, has been given 10 days for restoration. Currently, works to renovate sewerage manholes in front of the Secretariat are going on. The road repair works will begin after completion of the manhole works.
The 2.3-km Kowdiar-Pattom stretch is the other major road which requires immediate renovation. Drain works are going on from Marappalam to Pattom. Marappalam junction is now in a totally damaged condition. The TRDCL has been asked to complete the work within five days.
Repair works are also being carried out along the Museum- Bakery Junction- Thampanoor- Overbridge road and the Airport-MLA Hostel road.
Except M G Road, which has been given 10 days, all other roads have a five-day deadline to complete temporary works. With the monsoon expected to gain strength again, whether the road works are a boon or a bane is to be seen.
