THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Have you been scouring for some studied accounts on the history of Thiruvananthapuram? In case you fall among one of those history-thirsty souls, just head on to VJT Hall. The book fair being organised by State Institute of Language features some of the most sought after books on the history of the capital city.

  In addition to the all-time favourite of the bookies, ‘Thiruvananthapurathinte Ithihasam’ by Pattom G Ramachandran Nair, the fair also offers books like ‘Travancore Archaeological Series’ by K V Subrahmanya Aiyar and lot more.

The demand for these books has risen with the revelation of immense riches inside the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple. ‘’For youngsters like me, these books are the ideal way to traverse back to the history of the city.

We could also get to know more about the temple treasures,’’ says Rakesh, a college student.   Besides history, books covering a wide range of topics, including the latest technological trends on computer, are also for sale at the exhibition. The fair also includes most famous translations of classics in literature, books on gardening and on subjects ranging across cultural, technical and spiritual matters  and so on. About 2,500 books on various topics are put up for sale with a discount of 20 to 60 per cent.

  ‘Gurudeva Krithikal’ by Prof G Balakrishan, ‘The Man of an Age’ by R Sukumaran, ‘Dr Ambedkar’ (33 volumes) and ‘India Enna Vismayam’, translated by C P Aboobekker, are some among the most popular books at the fair. The book fair will be on till August 10.

  Meanwhile, the State Institute of Languages will bring out 101 books on September 12 in connection with the completion of the 100 days of the State Government.

The books will be released by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, O N V Kurup, Perumbadavam Sreedharan, Sugathakumari, C P Nair, Babu Paul, P Govinda Pillai, Adoor  Gopalakrishnan, Shashi Tharoor MP, Speaker G Karthikeyan and by other eminent persons in the field of art and literature.

The function will be held at the Mascot Hotel at 5 pm.

‘Adhunika Kalayile Lavanyathalangal’ by Dr Vijayakumara Menon, ‘Srinarayana Gurudeva Krithikal’ complete translation by Prof  G Balakrishnan Nair, ‘India 2020’ by A P J Abdul Kalam, ‘Kadhakali Mudhra’ by Dr R Sreekumar, N Jayakrishnan’s ‘Feminism’, ‘Ajithsinghinte Athmakadha’ translated by Nandiyodu Ramachandran, ‘Swathy Thirunal Krithikalum

Padanangalum’ by M Sharma, Dr M N Sridharan Nair’s ‘Nakshthraparinamavum Thamogarthangalum, ‘Indian Bharanakhadana’ by M V Paily are some of the books that will be published on the day.
