THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Valliyoorkaavu, where tribal legends and history nestles in the hills of  Wayanad near Mananthavadi, will play host to the first-ever national tribal fest in the state, from April 30.

 The event - Gothrayanam - which is planned for five days till May 4, will give a glimpse of the rich tribal traditions.

 Tribal and Youth Welfare Minister P K Jayalakshmi told mediapersons here on Thursday that the event has been conceived to evolve a new outlook for development and welfare of tribal folk in the state. The fest is jointly organised by the State ST Development Department and the Youth Welfare Board.

 Seminars and workshops related to tribal sectors, presentation of tribal arts of various states, handicrafts exhibition, flower show, literary workshop and honoring of outstanding tribal personalities will be the highlights of the fest, the minister said.

 Around 1000 delegates from the state and outside will attend the fest. Elected tribal representatives, chieftains of tribal hamlets and artistes will participate.

 Among the events planned are documentation and explanation of tribal art forms and cultural meetings between tribal groups from various states.

 Stalls exhibiting tribal medicines and food will be set up. Tribal experts will examine patients and prescribe medicines. Movies and documentaries depicting the life and culture of tribals will be screened. A sum of Rs 80 lakh had been earmarked for the conduct of the event, the minister said.

 On Monday, the fest will be set in motion after a torchlight procession from the Thalakkal Chanthu memorial at Panamaram to the venue. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the fest.
