Foreigner drowns off Kovalam beach

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Russian national drowned in the sea off Kovalam on Wednesday morning.

According to police, Mozgovoygicheslav (65), hailing from St Petersburg, Russia, was one among the 12-member team from St Petersburg, who were staying at a home stay near Kovalam from January 21.

A lifeguard, who saw the person drown, informed the police about the death around 7.30 a.m.   

“Mozgovoygicheslav’s daughter will arrive here on Thursday and the body will be buried at Syrian Orthodox Church at Thiruvithamcode, near Thakkala, where Russians were buried earlier also,” said Russia’s honorary consul Ratheesh C Nair.  The body is kept in the mortuary of Medical College Hospital after autopsy.

According to details available, the burial will take place after obtaining the autopsy report on Thursday.

The team from St Petersburg visited Kovalam as part of their Kerala tour, mainly intended to learn yoga and meditation.

The team members, other than team leader Mareena and interpreter Natasha, left for Kochi to resume the tour. Police said that there was nothing mysterious in the death and they had started an inquiry.
