‘Malayalam facing a series of invasions’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Myriad invasions are happening in the Malayalam language, writer George Onakkoor has said. He was speaking after inaugurating a seminar on ‘Malayalam language and Malayali society’ organised by the Amrutha Bharati Vidyapeetom.

Media invasion is the most important among this. Market invasion and political invasion have destroyed Malayalam, he said. To the Malayali, Malayalam is not merely a language for ideological discourse and literary musings. It is also the language of culture and emotions. The problem is the lack of the realisation of this aspect.

Malayalam is getting insulted in the land of Adi Sankara and Ezhuthachchan. In schools, Malayalam is subjected to ‘’infanticide.’’

To the Bengali, Tagore is still an emotional topic. But the Malayali cannot see Ezhuthachchan in this light, Onakkoor said.

Amrutha Bharati Vidyapeetom head Prof C G Rajagopal presided over the function.
