New block at GH gets power

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ‘power-starved’ new block at the General Hospital finally got electricity connection on Thursday. The hospital had been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons after 60 bottles of blood spoiled owing to power failure.

Vattiyoorkavu MLA K Muraleedharan had taken up the issue with KSEB Chairman T M Manoharan following the spoilage last Saturday.  Earlier, the KSEB had insisted on a new transformer for providing the supply. But now the supply has been given without a new transformer.

Muraleedharan’s office said in a statement that the blood bank’s operations will become full-fledged now that connection has been given.  The blood bank of the hospital is situated on the first floor of the new building, which has the casualty and OP wings on the ground floor. Power outage around 3 a.m. on Saturday had thrown haywire activities at this block.

Power supply was later given to the blood bank from a generator used in the casualty. But by then, 60 bottles of blood got spoiled and had to be discarded. Hospital authorities had roundly blamed the KSEB for not providing supply in time.
