Express News Service

There has to be a strong awareness campaign for conservation of energy, Electricity Minister Aryadan Muhammed has said.

He was speaking at a cycle rally for energy conservation organised by the Kerala Energy Conservation Forum, National Service Scheme and Vocational Higher Secondary Directorate.

The Minister said that the country and the state are facing a very serious energy crisis.

As many as 5 lakh houses in the state burn just one or two bulbs and if among the 80 lakh houses one light is switched off it would save 4,80,000 kilowatts of electricity. This is equivalent to producing 480 megawatts of electricity and the Minister pointed out that for creating one megawatt, ` 8 crore has to be spent.

The function that was held in front of the Press Club was presided over by Kerala Energy Conservation Form chairman Paravoor Sajeeb.

The cycle rally concluded at the Sasthamangalam NSS Higher Secondary School after touring the state.
