Fishermen Gherao met centre in city

Express News Service

Fishermen gheraoed the Meteorological Department’s centre in the city on Monday accusing it of not  informing them in time about the climate changes which, in turn, causes accidents and deaths in the seas as a result of violent storms.

The protest under the leadership of Kerala Swathanthra Matsya Thozhilali Federation was inaugurated by National Fish Workers’ Forum secretary T Peter.

“Over the past three days itself, 10 men have gone missing in the seas and the bodies of four were recovered. The fishermen do not have any measures to identify the climatic changes and the Met Centre has to take immediate measures on it,” said Valiyathura ward councillor Tony Oliver, who took part in the protest.

The Federation has also warned that unless an action plan was chalked out by Thursday to ensure safety in sea, the fishermen will again take out a march to the Met Centre on Friday.

At the protest on Monday, Anto Elias, J P John, Valerian Issac, Joseph Lopez, Maglin Peter, Freeska Kurisappan, Girly John, Germi Roy, Mable Nasiyan, Pushparani Lean, Patric Fernandez, Xavier Kulas and T Ouseph spoke.
