‘Be cautious when setting literary works to music’

Music directors should tread cautiously when setting literary works to music. Lyricists also should be careful in their selection of words and sounds when penning lines that are to be set to music, noted musician Dr B Arundhathi said on Monday.

Music directors should tread cautiously when setting literary works to music. Lyricists also should be careful in their selection of words and sounds when penning lines that are to be set to music, noted musician Dr B Arundhathi said on Monday.

 She was speaking on the topic ‘The relationship between music and literature’ at the seminar ‘Comparative Literature, Translation Studies: New Trends’ organised by the Malayalam Department of the Kerala University.   Citing examples, Arundhathi said lyricists should avoid words that are difficult to utter where the music rises to the higher pitches.

 The seminar was the fifth of a series being organised by the department to mark its golden jubilee. Malayalam Department head Dr C R Prasad presided over the function. Dr Joly Jacob, Dr Naduvattom Gopalakrishnan, Dr G Padma Rao and Arun S Sasi also spoke.
