THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Shashi Tharoor MP inaugurated a seminar for doctors organised by Jothydev’s Professional Education Forum (JPEF) in association with Diabetes India and Kesavadev Trust which dealt with diabetes. The seminar, held the other day in connection with World Diabetes Month, was part of a continuing medical education (CME) programme.

 Tharoor said treating diabetes immediately after the diagnosis of the disease is important. He said that all physicians treating diabetes should actively engage in educating and motivating the patients.

 IMA vice-president Vasudevan Potty pinned the blue circle, the symbol of diabetes, on Tharoor, as part of International Diabetes Federation’s ‘Pinning the Personality Campaign’.

 Jothydev Kesavadev, diabetologist, said that the rise in the number of heart attacks, lower limb amputations and kidney diseases in Kerala was a result of not adopting aggressive treatment strategies in the initial years of the disease’s onset. He said that it increases the cost of treating diabetes at least by 4 or 5 times, in the later years. He spoke on the recommended intensive treatment guidelines in diabetes.

 Tiny Nair, cardiologist, spoke on choosing diabetic therapies to prevent the onset of heart disease. Geetha M Nair, nephrologist, gave a talk on how effectively kidney diseases caused by diabetes can be prevented.

 Arun Shankar, consultant diabetoloigst, presided over. Gopika Krishnan, Thomas Titus, Chacko Varghese, Ashwin David and Balachandran spoke on the occasion. The programme was attended by more than 100 physicians.
