Vithura to be State's Fourth 'LED Village'

Express News Service

Vithura in Aruvikkara Assembly constituency will be the fourth region in the state to get the ‘LED Village’ project, which is designed to help local communities slash their power consumption using advanced technology.

In all, 750 poor families in the backward panchayat have been selected for the project, Speaker and Aruvikkara MLA G Karthikeyan said. The project envisages replacement of incandescent bulbs with the more energy-efficient Light Emitting Diode bulbs.

Fifty LED streetlamps are also part of the initiative, Karthikeyan said in a statement.  The project is being implemented by the Energy Management Centre (EMC) with support from the Union Power Ministry’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

‘’We will be using 9 Watt LEDs for the households and 25 Watt lamps for the streetlights,’’ said EMC director K M Dhareshan Unnithan.  According to Karthikeyan, Vithura grama panchayat will be able to save up to one lakh units of electricity through this project.
