Ace comedian and actor Vir Das kick-starts India’s largest stand-up comedy tour in Kochi

What does APJ Abdul Kalam, lesbians, nuclear missiles, penguins and cookies have in common? These are just a few of the topics that stand-up comedian, Vir Das, will speak about in the first few minutes of his new comedy show, Unbelievablish. “The concept is simple. I tell you stories about my life, like the time I flew an Air India plane for three hours, and you get to decide if these outlandish stories are true or false,” begins Das.

He explains that the Unbelievablish tour is India’s largest-ever comedy tour (17 cities in 45 days), but it’s really also about going beyond metropolitan cities and connecting with people who may be new to stand-up comedy. Though he’s headlined at the city’s Navy Ball the past two years, this will be his very first public performance here.

Funny bone

“I began my career in 2004 and it’s taken me 10 years to find my true voice as a stand-up artiste. Now I have 18 hours of different material to entertain people with. Though I’m a theatrically-trained actor, my forte is observational comedy,” he shares, elaborating, “My previous shows have been thematic. Battle of Da Sexes is about relationships and History of India caters to those who enjoy intelligent comedy. But Unbelievablish will appeal to everyone.” The show premiered in Pune this January, during his company, Weirdass Comedy’s Pajama Festival (the country’slargest comedy festival).

White lies

“There is a tick-sheet at the end of the 90-minute show. If anyone can guess which of the 10 stories I shared were true or false in the right sequence, I will give them a full ticket refund,” explains Das, who has released a new album, Bom in Live Bay, with his comedy rock band, Alien Chutney, and has five new Hindi films releasing this year, including Mastizaade with Sunny Leone. So did he really ride an ostrich to a garage when his bike broke down in Australia? To find out if he’s lying or honestly sharing his hilarious life experiences, head to JTPac on April 19.
