THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the successful implementation of the parking rearrangements on MG Road last week, the city police have decided to enforce parking restrictions on the Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam Road from Monday. This stretch will be designed as the second model road, the city police have said. In a press statement issued on Monday, the police said that the traffic along the stretch would be streamlined by setting up proper signboards, rearranging the parking system by differentiating parking and no parking zones. The implementation of traffic rules such as speed control, wearing helmets and seat belts will be inspected on a regular basis to ensure hassle-free traffic on the stretch.
On Monday, traffic wardens will be deployed on the stretch to ensure that traffic rules such as lane traffic and parking are properly followed. Motorists will be given awareness tips in the initial days in the form of pamphlets and notices. The traffic police will also make loudspeaker announce
The ‘pay and park’ arrangement on MG Road, initiated by the corporation administrative committee, will come into effect on Monday only on the Pulimood-Pazhavangady stretch of MG Road. A minimum fee of Rs 2 for two-wheelers and Rs 10 for four-wheelers for an hour will be levied.
The stretch starting from Pulimood to Pazhavangady was streamlined as a model road by the city police last Friday by deploying 10 traffic wardens. The parking arrangement was proposed by the district collector and city police on a pilot basis to avoid traffic congestion on the key stretches in the city.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Kumar Gurudin said that the ‘pay and park’ arrangement on MG Road would commence on Monday. “The decision on enforcing the pay system was made following a meeting convened by District Collector Biju Prabhakar on Saturday. However, this pay system will be implemented between Pulimood and Pazhavangady on a trial basis and will be further extended to other stretches in the coming days. We need to give emphasis to streamlining of traffic rather than focusing only on parking arrangements. Hence more model roads are in the offing,” he said.
