Express News Service

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:State police chief T P Senkumar on Friday issued directives to all district police chiefs to initiate legal action against those culling stray dogs illegally.

Senkumar also forwarded to them a copy of the letter, received from the Animal Welfare Board of India, stating that some organisations have come up in the state to cull dogs and that they will face the legal action.

The directive was issued following a meeting between Senkumar and Gauri Maulekhi, advisor to Union Minister Maneka Gandhi.

According to a statement issued by Humane society International managing director N G Jayasimha, culling of stray dogs is illegal and an inhumane act. “We welcome the move by the state police and hope that appropriate action will be initiated in this regard,” he said.
