'Every Human Being has Buddhahood'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a Buddhist association started by Buddhist philosopher Daisaku Ikeda has presence in India through its affiliate Bharat Soka Gakkai (BSG). in the city in connection with a book releasing function at Kerala Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, Honorary deputy chairperson Dr Akash Ouchi speaks about the ideals of Soka Gakkai and its relevance.

What does Soka Gakkai stands for?

Soka Gakkai believes in respecting human diversity and its potential. We believe that every human being has ‘Buddhahood’. By respecting it we believe goodness will be manifested.

India is a land of diversity and at times a section of the country make it an issue. What can be done to reduce intolerance towards diversity?

50% of our followers are youngsters. We teach them to be respectful towards their family members. Every one is unique. We have various youth campaigns on identifying ‘Buddhahood’.

What do you mean by ‘Buddhahood’?

It is the spirit of the undefeated that can overcome depression, unhappiness, arrogance, jealousy etc. It is hope and courage.

What are the functions of Bharat Soka Gakkai?

Established as a registered society in January 1986 with its headquarters in New Delhi, BSG has its membership spread over 350 cities across India. We have over 120,000 followers. At Gurugram we have planted over 4,000 bodhi trees and we are planning to increase the number by 10,000.

How did you come to settle in India?

I am originally from Tokyo. India fascinated me and it resulted in my journey to this country in 1975.
