Fish Maid Restaurant - An Exquisite Sea Food Experience

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Come April, city residents will get an exquisite sea food restaurant all set up in a cosy ambience, thanks to the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation.

Named ‘Fish Maid’, the restaurant will come up at Housing Board Junction here mid-year. The restaurant will provide delicacies made of fresh fish procured by the corporation.

“The full-fledged restaurant will come up on a 1,600 sq ft area. A fresh fish stall will also be opened alongside. The details of the project are being worked out,” said Corporation’s assistant manager (marketing) Binor Murali.

“The current plan is to open a classy outlet which will function from 12 noon to 12 pm. Besides conventional dishes, a variety of new products will also be available,” he said. The KSCADC’s initial plan to set up the restaurant in Ernakulam was dropped owing to the non-availability of space. It plans to open a series of Fish Maid restaurants across the state. “The restaurant in the capital will be run directly by the corporation. Other outlets are planned in a franchisee model,” he said.

What is Fish Maid?

Projecting the high demand for hygienic fish and its products, the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC) along with the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT), Kochi has formulated a model comprehensive modern fish retail outlet where the fish products developed by CIFT would be branded and marketed. The products will be made available to the public under the brand name “Fish Maid”.

Development projects

The Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation Limited (KSCADC) is implementing five primary educational infrastructural projects at an estimate of Rs 13.86 crores in the capital, Fisheries and Ports Minister K Babu said. He was addressing the foundation stone laying ceremony for Vettor Government Higher Secondary School’s new academic block the other day. Of this, projects worth Rs 70 lakh have already been completed.The minister also laid the foundation stone for a school auditorium worth Rs 55 lakhs from Varkala Kahar MP’s developmental fund and a new academic block that comes under the state educational department.

The two-storied academic block worth Rs 207.28 lakh comes under the rural primary infrastructure project of NABARD for 2013 to 2015. The 687.2 square meter academic block has five classrooms, one smart classroom, staff room, computer room and a library.

Babu also laid the foundation stone for the sub-center of KSCADC’s Vettoor Public Health Centre. The 75.31 square meter sub-centre worth Rs 30 lakhs has a consulting room, injection room, pharmacy, reception and a toilet.

What are the products?

Fish Maid Products have been developed under the project, “Responsible Harvesting and Utilization of Selected Small Pelagics and Fresh water fishes (RHSSP) at CIFT, Kochi, from small pelagic fishes like oil sardine, mackerel, anchovies and fresh water fishes. The 25 products branded ‘FISH MAID’ were selected from more than 40 products developed under the project through consumer response surveys and trial market studies.

Which type of fish are used?

Low priced fishes which have a high content of protein and omega 3 fatty acids are used providing increased nutritional value to consumers at an affordable cost

How does it help fisher folk?

  • The project aims at converting the 30 % of harvested fish into valuable products and thereby increasing the income of fishermen per fishing effort
  • Self Help Groups like Society for Assistance to Fisherwomen (SAF) are used in this project for production
  • The decentralized production coupled with centralized quality control mechanisms and strong marketing efforts will ensure more income to fisher families
  • The project will provide employment for 500 fisher families
  • Fisher women will be engaged as sales women in the outlets
