7-year RI for Raping Minor
T’Puram: A 65-year-old man was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a four-year-old girl. He has been identified as Sivasankaran, a native of Anad. He has been penalised `20,000 by First Class Additional District Magistrate K P Indira. He will have to serve an additional year in jail in case of non-payment of fine. The incident occurred when the victim went to attend tuition classes at the residence of convict’s relative in Vattappara. The Vattappara police had arrested him.
Escape Bid: Accused Injured
T’Puram: A person against whom the court had issued a warrant, was injured after he tried to escape from police custody at Mangalapuram police station in the wee hours of Friday. The accused, Manoj, was nabbed by the police on charges of a hurt case. When he was brought to the station on Thursday night with several others, he tried to push the guard at the police station and run away. However, he fell on the ground after he slipped on a stone and eventually he was arrested. The body of Malayali CRPF constable Leju N, one of three CRPF commandos killed in an encounter with Maoists in Chattisgarh, is expected to be airlifted to Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday.
Leju, 24, belonged to Varuvilakath Puthuval House, Aithiyoor, Balaramapuram. Three CRPF jawans had been killed and around 15 hurt in the attack at Sukhma district of Chattisgarh. Leju’s squad, which had been patrolling the region, was fired at by Maoists. The body of Leju was taken to Raipur on Friday.
Protest at Kerala varsity HQ Ends
T’Puram: The protest by Left-affiliated Syndicate members, which began on Monday at the Kerala University headquarters, was called off on Friday after Vice-Chancellor P K Radhakrishnan assured the protesters that a meeting of the Syndicate would be convened on March 23.
The Syndicate members were protesting against the alleged ‘autocratic style of functioning’ of the vice-chancellor. According to them, the VC skipped many items on the agenda and wound up the meeting on February 29.
