THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Celebrating the first birthday of  the child is a special occasion for any parent. But when Adrin Dhara’s first birthday was celebrated at KIMS Hospital here the other day, it turned out to be an occasion for his parents Shampa Dhara and Surjith Dhara, a couple from West Bengal, to express gratitude to the doctors and the hospital staff who brought Adrin back to life.

Adrin, the only son of the Bengali couple, had been suffering from congenital liver disease.

Though the child was treated at various hospitals in West Bengal, finding no relief, he was brought to Kerala for further treatment. Chief liver transplant surgeon at KIMS, Dr Venugopal, who examined the kid, advised immediate transplantation as the only way to save his life.

The mother was ready to donate her liver and the ESI Corporation’s  financial assistance came to her rescue.

The team led by Dr Venugopal conducted the 16-hour-long surgery of successfully transplanting the liver.

After prolonged care at the intensive care unit of the hospital, Adrin came back to life and celebrated the first birthday along with his doctors and the other staff who nursed him.
