THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government on Wednesday assured the Assembly that additional posts of doctors and paramedical staff will be created at Neyyatinkara General Hospital.

This was stated by Health Minister K K Shailaja in her reply to a submission by K Ansalan of the CPM about the need to create additional posts in the hospital. The Minister said that though Neyyatinkara District Hospital was upgraded to a General Hospital in 2013, posts were not created accordingly.

“The government has asked the Director of Health Services to submit a comprehensive proposal on creation of posts after standardisation. The additional posts required in Neyyatinkara General Hospital will also be included in the proposal,” she said.

Shailaja said that the number of Out-patients seeking treatment in the hospital every year is between 1,800 to 2,000. The hospital also caters to around 400 In-patients every year.  The services of specialty doctors in orthopaedics, skin diseases, ophthalmology, pediatrics, gynaecology, ENT surgery and medicine are available at the hospital.

Stating that the staff shortage in the hospital will be addressed, the Health Minister said a meeting will soon be convened to discuss ways to improve the functioning of the hospital.
