THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ‘Changathi’, the literacy programme launched by the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority for migrant labourers, is ready for a statewide roll-out.
As a preliminary step, the survey to identify beneficiaries from one local body each in 13 districts, has begun. Ernakulam was exempted from the survey as the programme has already been launched in the district on a pilot basis.
Labour Minister T P Ramakrishnan released the survey report prepared by the local body concerned under the guidance of the district literacy mission.
The Minister said all welfare measures implemented by the government for labourers in the state will be extended to migrant workers too.
Ramakrishnan lauded the literacy mission for launching the programme which he said was a model for the nation.
Mayor V K Prasanth presided over the function. Literacy Mission director P S Sreekala and assistant directors K Ayyappan Nair and Vijayamma spoke on the occasion.

The decision to roll out ‘Changathi’ across the state was taken after the success of the pilot programme implemented at Perumbavoor in Ernakulam.
The survey has identified a total of 7,103 migrant workers as learners across the state. This includes 6,475 men and 538 women.
The project intends to impart literacy to the beneficiaries in four months. Five hours of classes will be held every week.
Each ‘vidya kendra’ will have around five to 10 learning centres under it. Each learning centre will have around 15 to 20 learners.
