THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government is for bringing in legislation to regulate the self-financing medical colleges in the state,Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Monday.
In fact,the all-important decision was taken at an all-party meeting convened by the Chief Minister here. According to Pinarayi, the legislation would include the suggestions made by all the political parties.
Except the chief Opposition UDF, all the others attended the meeting.
Health Minister K K Shylaja, Education Minister C Raveendranath, Revenue Minister E Chandrasekharan, Ports Minister Ramachandran Kadannapally and others were present.
Emerging from the meeting, senior CPM leader and former Speaker M Vijayakumar said the government should bring in the necessary legislation. However, since it was a complex issue, the government must look into all the legal aspects before taking a final decision.
Kerala Congress leader K M Mani said the government should decide on the fee structure for the colleges. Moreover, he said the government should come up with a programme for providing assistance to the indigent students.
V V Rajesh of the BJP said his party wanted the government to fix the fee structure for all the seats. Another suggestion was to remit the fee initially with the government, which could then be handed over to the managements.
Noting it was only a preliminary discussion, the officials said the government would convene another all-party meeting soon. Apart from this, the government would be holding discussions with the managements before a final decision was taken.
As per the apex court order, admissions to all the seats should be based on the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) results. Moreover, the court said there should be a uniform fee structure for the students.
