Street library established at Manaveeyam road in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Manaveeyam Road near Vellayambalam, known as the cultural hub of the city, now boasts of a street library and reading corner.

The launch of the street library was held on Sunday to mark the death anniversary of former Chief Minister E M S Namboodiripad. An art installation by Lalithakala Akademi award winner Sumesh Bala was the key highlight of the inaugural function.

Poet Vinod Viasakhi inaugurated the installation by handing over a mix of colours to Sumesh Bala. K Ratheesh Kumar of ‘Eettillam’ band presented solo songs followed by poetry recital by Ratheesh Kottaram, Jagadeesh Kovalam, Haseena A, Abhirami S Kumar and Rahul S.

Around 12 daily news papers have been included in the street library. The organisers have also planned to include periodicals and books to the collection in the coming days.

According to organisers, Manaveeyam road will also turn into the venue of discussions, film screening, staging of plays and various cultural activities.

The street library and reading corner is a joint effort of www.aksharamonline.com, Manaveeyam Theruvidam Culture collective, Centre for Film and Gender and Culture Studies.
