NEYYAR DAM (T’PURAM) : With the sun shining bright on Monday and the southwest monsoon taking a backseat after unleashing its fury for an entire day on Sunday, it was tourism time at Neyyar, where the dam’s shutters were opened to let out the excess water. Families were seen posing for group photographs and selfies with the foaming white water which gushed out of the raised shutters as the background.

Water levels in the Neyyar reservoir in
Thiruvananthapuram have gone up with
the Southwest monsoon turning active.

The dam’s shutters were opened at 3 pm on Sunday after water levels hit the maximum mark. Following this, the district administration issued a warning to people living on the river banks. No untoward incident was reported on Monday though. In fact, the district received little rainfall on the day even as educational institutions remained closed following a government decision.

The office of Water Resources Minister Mathew T Thomas said the Neyyar Dam shutters will be kept open till the situation eased. The Neyyar reservoir, where water levels had dipped to an alarming low during summer, is now full. The Meteorological Department has ruled out the likelihood of a repetition of Sunday’s rains in the district any time soon. The department has forecast cloudy sky with few spells of rain/thunder shower for the district till Thursday morning.
