Voicing out gender and sexuality issues

From our online archive

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Publicly identifying as a gay or lesbian may be less of a taboo today but for some people, being open about their sexual orientation or gender identity is still a daring statement.  To bring a change in this attitude, EQU-ALL, an initiative for gender equality and sexual freedom supported by the Kerala State Youth Commission, took out a gender rally on Thursday.

The rally brought together socially-committed people from all walks of life and all shades of sexuality to promote a much-desired change in social attitudes.  This group has been organising campaigns and competitions since last week in association with colleges.

“The idea stemmed when we decided to bring together all the issues related to gender,” said Kalyani Vallath, one of the organisers. But the highlight of the programme was the campaign, #ItHappenedtoMe, which gave a platform for participants to share their gender experiences anonymously, to support other.
This venture, initiated by TES, Queerythm and Oasis Transgender support group, is supported by the Kerala State Youth Commission.
