Andhra Pradesh man gets 10-year rigorous imprisonment for driving wife to suicide

VIJAYAWADA: The Mahila Sessions Court on Tuesday convicted a person, accused of abetting the suicide of his wife, and sentenced him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine Rs 1000 fine on him.The accused, Reddicherla Venkateswara Rao, was charged with torturing his wife Syamala. Unable to bear his harassment, she attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze in March 31, 2014. She died while undergoing treatment in hospital two days later.

On the day of her suicide attempt, her son Roop Kumar had filed a complaint with Nunna police, alleging that Venkateswara Rao was torturing her.  The Nunna police had filed a charge-sheet accusing him of abettment to suicide. The Mahila Sessions judge M Babitha convicted him for abettment to suicide and sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment under Section 306 and Section 498 (A) of the Indian Penal Code.
