Working parents told to take time out for kids

From our online archive

VIJAYAWADA:  Blame it on their busy life to make ends meet, most of the parents are not able to spend quality time with their children. With lack of emotional support from their parents, these children are feeling lonely and are getting attracted to vices. In their pursuit of money, the parents tend to forget that they have another role to play, which is to monitor their children’s activities. Parents, who come home late in the evening, are hooked on to smartphones and social networking sites, as a result their children are  feeling utterly dispirited and depressed.

With no one to share their feelings, they are making friends outside of school and getting involved in destructive activities which can ruin their future forever. When it comes to parenting, many moms and dads wish they could spend a little more quality time with their little ones, but given the pressures of daily life sometimes these opportunities can be lost. The case of two minor girls, aged 13, who went missing from their school in Bhavanipuram on Thursday is one such startling example to the above mentioned. Feeling depressed that their parents don’t have time to spend with them, these two girls, who are studying Class VIII in a private school in Bhavanipuram, decided to leave for Hyderabad by boarding Krishna Express at Vijayawada railway station. However, they were traced and restored to their parents after giving counselling on Friday afternoon.

When police asked the children the reason for leaving their homes, they said, “We feel lonely in our homes as our parents are always busy working. We cannot share our feelings with them, hence, we have decided to move to other place and live our own life.”In-charge Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shaik Nawaz Jaan said they traced the two minor girls in Secunderabad railway station and brought them back to Vijayawada. “With the help of recorded CCTV footage at the railway station, we traced the girls by alerting the railway police at Secunderabad,” he said.

“Many parents now-a-days are busy working in order to earn more money. Due to the rising cost of living, they are working hard to make ends meet. Children spend more time at home than in school, therefore, parents should monitor their children’s activities and with whom they spend their time,” he opined.
“The school managements too have an equal responsibility in observing the behavioural changes in adolescents. Teens have forgotten how to have real conversations with real people. SMSing and online chat do not constitute “real” conversation and friendships formed online are not tangible or connected friendships,” he said.

Monitor your child’s activities
Every school should constitute parent management committee to discuss the problems being faced by children
But, most of the schools in the city, are flouting the norms and have failed to form psychiatry committee
There is a need to implement the regulations framed by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)
As the parent’s behaviour has an impact on a growing child, they need to prioritise and spend time with the children
