VIJAYAWADA: On the first day of a special drive against helmetless ride, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) officials have booked as many as 165 cases, seized 44 two-wheelers and collected a fine of Rs 45,000 from violators. Despite booking of cases against the traffic rule violators, a majority of two-wheeler riders were seen without helmet in the city on Thursday.
The Krishna District Road Safety Committee meeting chaired by Collector B Lakshmikantham, took a decision to penalise the two-wheeler riders violating the helmet rule heavily to prevent mishaps. As part of the initiative, instructions were given to the RTA and police to crack a whip on the violators and impose a fine of Rs 1,100 that includes road safety fund.
City Police Commissioner Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao formed special teams to enforce the helmet rule. Starting Thursday, the RTA officials toughened their stand against helmetless ride in Vijayawada and its suburbs by registering cases and imposing a fine of Rs 1,100. “We will set up hoardings in the city to create awareness among two-wheeler riders about the importance of wearing helmet,” said Deputy Transport Commissioner E Meera Prasad.
