The facility was inaugurated on April 1, 1982 as a sponsored project for the Department of Electronics. The first Advisory Committee (1982-1987) was headed by former President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who was then Director of the Defence Research Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad. In September 1992, the government of Andhra Pradesh made it a permanent establishment in Osmania University. It is one of the first university centres to work in the area of Global Positioning System (GPS) and GPS-aided Geo Augmented Navigation System.
