Forgotten Forms of Heavy Metal

'Classic heavy metal is our genre. The music of the 80s, which we feel is extinct now is what we hope to bring back to this generation,' says 20-year-old Fredy John.

They weren’t looking for an ordinary platform for music when they joined hands in 2009. They wanted to grow as a professional music band with an aim on bringing back the “extinct” form of heavy metal. They call themselves Rocazaurus — a reminder of the extinct species.

“Classic heavy metal is our genre. The music of the 80s, which we feel is extinct now is what we hope to bring back to this generation,” says 20-year-old Fredy John, vocalist and lead guitarist, a student of Sacred Hearts College, Kochi.

Rocazaurus is a band of four musicians aged between 19 and 24. The youngest Lesley Rodrigues (base guitarist) is a Class XII student of Sacred Hearts School in Kochi and the eldest Alex Anthraper (rhythm guitarist), a graduate from Rajagiri College, Kochi. Alfred Noel (drums) aged 20 is also from Sacred Hearts College in Kochi.

“Initially, the band had three members — Noel, Jose and me. Lesley joined later. Recently, Alex replaced Jose when he had to leave. The band was not formed keeping in mind the routine competitions and shows in college. We dreamt big,” says Fredy.

Rocazaurus has performed at various music fests in and outside the State, including Bangalore and Chennai. Representing Kerala and winning the first place at Strawberry Fields, a competition among 40 bands from across the country, held in Bangalore last year is what the band considers its best strike so far.

Rocazaurus is now busy with recordings for their first album titled Rise of the Extinct.
