TIRUVARUR:Nonagenarian DMK president and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Monday filed his nomination for contesting from his home turf Tiruvarur. He is seeking re-election from the constituency, from where he had won in 2011.
The DMK patriarch, who had successfully contested the Assembly elections 12 times so far, left from his sister’s house in Sannadhi Street for his mother Anjugam’s memorial at Kattur village.
After paying floral tributes, he returned and later set off to the Revenue Divisional Office (RDO) at South Main Street to file his papers.
At 12.50 pm, he filed his papers before Revenue Divisional Officer and returning officer of Tiruvarur R Muthumeenakshi. He was accompanied by his spouse Rajathi Ammal, former Union Ministers T R Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran among others.
DMK president M Karunanidhi’s assets have increased from Rs 4.92 crore in 2011 to Rs 13.43 crore in 2016.
It is a whopping 272 per cent jump as per the affidavit filed by him along with his nomination papers.
His yearly income which stood at Rs 37 lakh in 2009-10 has increased to Rs 1.21 crore in the year 2014-15. Yet, he neither owns a residential building nor a car!
He also disclosed the assets and income of his two spouses.
His second spouse, Rajathi, is the richest with Rs 42 crore assets.
Besides owning residential buildings, she has the highest annual income during 2014-15, which stood at Rs 1.17 crore. She also has liabilities of Rs 11.94 crore as loans, out of which she owes Rs 1.17 crore to her daughter Kanimozhi.
