MADURAI: Actor-turned-politician and founder of Nadalum Makkal Katchi (NMK) M Karthik is likely to contest in the upcoming Assembly election from Nanguneri constituency. An official announcement in this regard will come on Wednesday, sources said.

The party had hopes of aligning with the DMK, but its demand for seats numbering over two digits soured its chances. Now, the party has decided to offer soft support to the ruling AIADMK. Releasing the first list of 30 candidates on Tuesday, the actor said they had a very good candidate for RK Nagar seat, but have decided against fielding him out of “absolute respect for the Chief Minister”.

After talks with DMK failed, Karthik had launched a coalition named ‘Vidiyal’, comprising of six small outfits. He had initially stated that he would not contest, but now changed his plan, and would contest from Nanguneri constituency, sources said. NMK claims to have a vote bank among the Thevar community, and the candidates announced were for southern districts where the community is strong.
