LOS ANGELES: Actor Jennifer Lawrence has shot at the trolls and media, who criticised her over her revealing dress, calling the debate "sexist" and "utterly ridiculous".

The 27-year-old actor took to Facebook to give it back to those who had commented that she should have worn a coat in the cold weather of London at the event for her latest Soviet spy thriller "Red Sparrow".

Lawrence wrote she did not think she needed to cover her dress with "a coat and a scarf" and even if she was standing in the snow, it was her "choice" to go for coveralls or not.

She was dressed in black Versace gown with a plunging sweetheart-style neckline and a hip-high slit.

"Wow.

I don't really know where to get started on this 'Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold' controversy.

This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended.

"That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I'm going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for five minutes.

I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice," she wrote.

Social media users and some fashion portals also pointed out that while her co-stars Joel Edgerton, Jeremy Irons, Matthias Schoenaerts and director of the film Francis Lawrence were all dressed in winter clothes, she was "forced" to play dress up as she was the female lead.

Lawrence said the media was "overreacting" over "silly issues", thus veering the attention from more important issues at hand.

"This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism.

Overreacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward.

It's creating silly distractions from real issues.

Get a grip people.

Everything you see me wear is my choice.

And if I want to be cold THAT'S MY CHOICE TOO!" she said.
