WASHINGTON: A-listers Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet are in talks to star in the feature adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott classic 'Little Women'.

It is set to be directed by Greta Gerwig, who received critical acclaim for her directorial debut feature, 'Lady Bird', reports Variety.

The novel, which follows the March sisters - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy - in post-Civil War America, has gone through numerous adaptations. The novel describes the overlapping of childhood and young womanhood of the four sisters, and their harrowing experiences. The story is loosely based on the American author's life.

It was previously adapted into a 1994 feature, starring Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, Susan Sarandon and Kirsten Dunst.

In 1917 and 1918 there were two silent films made based on the book. Three other feature film adaptations were done by George Cukor in 1933, Mervyn LeRoy in 1949, David Lowell Rich in 1978.

2018 will be the 150 anniversary of the novel.
