LOS ANGELES: Fresh from his Academy Award win for Best Actor, Michael B. Jordan is set to produce and potentially star in a film adaptation of the popular video game franchise Battlefield.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie — known for directing the last four Mission: Impossible instalments — will write, direct and produce the project.

Game publisher Electronic Arts is also attached as a producer, with plans to develop the property into a large-scale, cinematic action franchise aimed at theatrical release. Major studios, including Apple and Sony, have reportedly been approached, with a bidding war expected.

The Battlefield series debuted in 2002 with Battlefield 1942 and has since explored conflicts ranging from the World Wars to Vietnam and near-future settings. Its latest instalment, Battlefield 6, was the top-selling shooter of 2025.

Earlier efforts to adapt the franchise for television — by Fox in 2012 and Paramount in 2016 — never came to fruition.

Video game adaptations continue to gain traction in Hollywood. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has reportedly grossed $764 million worldwide, making it the biggest film of the year so far. Other upcoming releases include Mortal Kombat II, Resident Evil, Street Fighter and a new Angry Birds instalment.

McQuarrie most recently directed Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which earned nearly $600 million globally. He previously won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for The Usual Suspects.

For Jordan, who won his first Oscar for his dual roles in Sinners directed by Ryan Coogler, the project adds to an already busy slate. His upcoming work includes a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair — which he also directs and stars in alongside Adria Arjona — and Miami Vice '85, directed by Joseph Kosinski, where he stars opposite Austin Butler.
