KALAIPULI S Thanu’s magnum opus 'Kandasamy', directed by Susi Ganesan is making waves even before its release. One of the many reasons is the buzz about its excellent cinematography and rich visuals, virgin locales all shot by N K Ekambaram. “Kandasamy was a challenge,” avers Ekambaram and tells us why the film is special.
“The Mexican portions were the biggest challenge especially the car chases there,” explains Ekambaram. “We had to shoot using the night effect and used balloon lighting. We shot some exciting action sequences in the cornfield scenes. Vikram was shown flying with no dupes. For one shot I even clung to the bottom of a helicopter with Susi holding me from above, as I canned the shot,” recalls Ekambaram who used the super 35 camera as well.
“Susi is a brilliant creator with lots of energy. He expects 200 per cent from every shot! He asks for ideas and then chooses from my options. The perfect sync we had has yielded excellent results. The film is like a Hollywood one and not like any other Indian movie seen before,” avers Ekambaram. They also shot in the 100 year old Ascoli Beach Opera House in Italy for the film. Apart from this the unit traveled to France, Mexico, Kenya, the Grand Canyon and even Muscat for some shoots. Ekambaram, who started his career with Tamizhan is onto the next project in Hindi. It is Priyadarshan’s De Dhana Dhan, starring Kareena and Akshay Kumar.
