India’s singing diva turns 83

With nearly seven decades of crooning, the voice of Lata Mangeshkar is still one of the most synonymous Bollywood voices of romance and on her 83 birthday on Friday, her popularity was evident from her songs lilting through most forms of social media.

 While she quietly stole herself away from Mumbai to celebrate her birthday, Bollywood took to Twitter to convey their wishes.

 And the singing sensation of yesteryear took to the same to share the highlight of her day – a birthday wish from the Pope himself! Her younger sister Asha Bhosle, also a celebrated vocalist, wished her sister an emotional happy birthday.

 “I will only say that she is Goddess Saraswati herself. I will touch my head to her feet and bow down to her, seek her blessings and will pray for her long life,” said Asha.

 Mangeshkar who began her career in 1942, albeit having started singing when a teenager, sang her first Hindi song was ‘Paa lagoon kar jori’ for Vasant Joglekar’s movie Aap Ki Seva Mein in 1946.

 Post that, songs like ‘Tumhen yaad karte karte’, ‘Ajeeb daastan hai yeh’, ‘Bahon mein chale aao’, and ‘Choti si umar main’ have become her identity.

 The Bharat Ratna awardee has sung for generations of actresses, right from Madhubala to Kajol.
