BENGALURU: Legendary lyricist-director Gulzar lends his name only occasionally to a film these days. But the veteran has collaborated with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and written the screenplay and lyrics of his forthcoming film Mirzya which is based on the Mirza-Sahibaan folklore.

Just like the film, its soundtrack too integrates elements of folk while contemporarising it at the same time. Gulzar explains, “The sound and style of folk is spontaneous. The beauty of folk is that each time you can present it after adding apne daur ka namak. And the same has been done by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy because Mirzya’s sounds are modern and the style is of today. The film is also based in the past but it still sounds and looks like today’s generation.”

The poet Gulzar believes his lyrics were organically created. “The story of Mirzya ne khud hi geet likhva liye mujhse,” he says. “The characters and the story spoke to me.”
