Going by the recent trend, dialogues are definitely gaining attention from most filmmakers in the Kannada film industry. Over the years, directors like Yograj Bhat, Suri, and Guruprasad have achieved a comfortable degree of success for their distinctive style with good narration, good song picturisation and a perfect blend of punching one-liners.
A recent example is Suni's Simple Agi Ondhu Love Story. What was considered as double meaning dialogues written by Suni and delivered by the hero, Rakshith Shetty and heroine Shweta Srivastava, has been accepted and applauded. Dialogues became the backbone of the film and it has been the talk of the town, doing extremely well at multiplexes too.
"While just focusing on two characters, I had to attract the audience with the dialogues, which has been appreciated. What is surprising is that today people use my dialogues in their regular conversation," said Suni.
Dialogues are one of the main elements concentrated by Yograj Bhat in his movies. Be it the blockbuster Mungaru Male or Gaalipata to his recent film Drama, the audience look forward to his films more because it is dialogue driven. Peenya Gopi recently received the State Film Award for best dialogues in the film, Allide Nammane Illi Bande Summane. According to him, the dialogue phase is running now. "This is a phase. The journey of films have seen the silent era, mythological films, family oriented films, etc. Then came action, and comedy. Today we see people getting more attracted to films, which have more strength in dialogues. This is just a phase. Slowly, this might fade and people would want to see something new," said Gopi, adding, "Nothing can go overboard. Cinema is complete only if it can be balanced with a good story, cinematography, dialogues, comedy, action, etc., which are the main ingredients for entertainment."Films with dialogues also reduces the budget of the movie. Today films like Matta and Edelu Manjunatha were successful because of their dialogues. Jaggesh, who has been part of such good films said, "I have been talking from past 30 years. If you have the capacity to be hilarious, you can run the show. Back then I was pulled down for having double meaning dialogues in my films. Though certain section of the audience did not like it, the public enjoyed them. Today the same dialogues have become a trend and I feel happy. In fact at a recent press conference, one of my journalist friend pointed out that every dialogue that I had delivered in the past, has come back and is often repeated in other films." It has also been observed that some of today's directors first write the dialogues and then come to the scenes. While there are others who have earned a name just by focusing on their writing. It has given them more popularity and even branded them in a different league.Actor and director Upendra has branded his own style of dialogues, which is mostly for the masses. Directors like MS Ramesh has written dialogues for most of Darshan's films while Malavali Sai Krishna became famous for dialogues for the film Jogi.
"Be it action, dialogues or comedy, I only request film makers to make good movies and give good messages to public," said Jaggesh.
