For decades, underworld films, especially those made in Malayalam,have been following a conventional formula. The majority of the heroes in these movies go through a difficult phase in the beginning when a thousand fingers are pointed out at them for no reason.
Apart from the hero and his closest allies and the family, the rest of the world is full of evil and villainous people. But do not write the hero off. Fed up with the injustice, he rises from the ashes. Then, we will hear him roaring: “It is this society that made me a criminal.” Sorry for the long preface, ‘Asuravithu,’ A K Sajan’s new offering, is no way a different treat. It follows the same formula that was experimented for umpteenth times in Malayalam. The only difference is that he opts for Asif Ali, the young actor to portray the role of the hero named Don Bosco - the Asuravithu. This is the actor’s first tryst with a heavy action-packed thriller and that is the lone fresh element in the movie. Asif does not disappoint the audience, but the movie surely did. It is all about a young lad, Don Bosco, who is studying at a seminary.
Though born to a notorious goon, Satan, the boy leads the life of a Good Samaritan. But destiny changes the rules of his life. He is getting hunted by Abba (Vijayaraghavan) and his five grandchildren. Don leaves the seminary and takes a new ‘avatar’.
Rechristening himself as Don David, he even starts an underworld company. And, the name of David and Co? It is D company. Remember it’s all set in Kochi, our own Kochi! Then begins the death race.
Killing one after the other in a row, our action hero is writing a new game of revenge. Holy heavens! Do not think that our hero totally forgets that ‘Good Samaritan’ in his heart. After every crime he chants: “Mia Culpa, Mia Culpa, Mia Maxima Culpa.” It seems Sajan is very fond of using Biblical verses as we have seen him using the same in many of his previous films. But in many scenes, the flow of the script will bring in another Biblical verse to the viewers mind. “Father please forgive them for they know not what they do.”
