Musafir: Of love and more

Musafir, a romantic thriller starring Rahman and Mamta in the lead, releases this Friday

Express News Service

Musafir, touted as one of the exorbitant action thrillers of Mollywood, will hit the screens this Friday. The film was initially scheduled to release nearly four years ago, but got shelved owing to some technical hiccups. Directed by Pramod-Pappan duo, Musafir stars Rahman, Bala and Mamta Mohandas.

Babu Janardanan, the scenarist, says the delay has not marred the relevance of the film by any means. “Musafir tells the lives of some NRIs living in Dubai, and has a global backdrop,” he says. “The film got delayed because it was being shot at far-flung locales, including Dubai, Singapore and London.” The scenarist adds that the film has an exciting storyline that is not confined to any particular period.

The movie begins with Anupama, an affluent young woman (Mamta), who is organising music shows. She is also the daughter of a rich businessman G K (Cochin Haneefa) in Dubai. An ardent lover of art and music, Anupama is also a regular organiser of such programmes. Soon, a musician, Humayoon(Rahman), enters the scene. He is seeking Anupama’s financial assistance in order to compose a symphony. She vehemently refuses his request.

But one day, she gets a chance to understand the musician’s caliber, when he was asked to perform at a show, as a dance programme was cancelled at the last moment. Anupama is impressed by his performance and consequently, accepts his request. Soon, they are struck by cupid. Their affection for each other creates a tug-of-war between Humayoon and Sakthi (Bala), an employee at Mamta’s father’s company, who has feelings for Anupama. Sakthi then decides to  kill Rahman.

Meanwhile, G K plans to revamp their brand by launching a new logo. The story takes an unexpected turn, when the same logo is introduced in the market by another firm.

“The film, with its scintillating scenes, is an out-and-out entertainer. The visuals are the major highlight,” says Babu Janardanan, who adds, “The theme of globalisation and its impact on the international scene have not been showcased much in Mollywood.”

Divya Unni, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Mamukkoya and P Sreekumar are the other actors. Cochin Haneefa, who has a prominent role, passed away in the midst of the shooting. “His unexpected demise was a big loss for us. We have retained his character, though he left us before the dubbing started,” says the scenarist. Ouseppachen has done the music, and the singers are M G Radhakrishnan, Shahbas Aman and Balabhaskar. The film is produced by Sunir Hamsa.
