Simply Priya

Priyamani gets talking about her latest films, tryst with small screen and turning an overnight style icon with D for Dance.

Navamy Sudhish

She is hardly the showbiz siren you expect her to be. Priyamani, with her panache for picking the right roles and a career spread across all south languages, believes in instincts. She has a lucky streak when it comes to Mollywood with almost all her films raking in money and reviews. The actress is all set to put on the greasepaint for Siby Malayil’s next and her small screen debut is hitting high TRPs. The pretty star gets talking about her latest films, tryst with small screen and turning an overnight style icon with D for Dance.

Fashion quotient

It feels great to know that my styling for D for Dance got noticed, but all credit goes to Poornima Indrajith. She understands what is  needed and gives me references and keeps me updated on the ‘in’ things in fashion circuits. It’s basically a collaboration and since Poornima has been a part of the industry she knows what exactly is trending. She doesn’t restrict things and gives freedom to the wearer. I am not basically a fashion freak, but keep a track on things.

Zeroing in on films

Before signing the dotted line I make sure that the film has a solid script. And if it fits my criteria I will do it, but the outcome is not definitely in my hands. If the script works for me I will give my nod and leave the rest for fate. It’s the same with all languages.

Item dance, why not?

Being a national-award-winning actress doesn’t mean that I should restrict myself. ‘Chennai Express’ was a Bollywood film with Shah Rukh in it and there was no reason to shy away. I think the whole concept of item number has changed over the years. Now all leading actresses are doing this song sequences or special appearances or whatever they like to call it. It was a nice dance number and when Rohit Shetty offered it to me there was no point in turning it down. I am happy with its outcome because now the Bollywood audience recognise me as the one-two-three girl.

Small screen diva

It’s my first stint in mini screen as a celebrity judge and I am quite enjoying myself. I think it’s a fitting TV debut for me. Since it’s a dance reality show and I love dancing I didn’t think much when D for Dance came my way.

The show is doing extremely well, it has lots of followers and they all adore the concept of the show. We plan to keep entertaining the viewers the way we have done so far till the end.

Next in the pipeline

Right now I am busy wrapping up a Kannada film. In Malayalam I am doing Sibi Malayil’s next opposite Jayaram, and yes, a couple of others are under discussion.
