From syrupy capers to heartbreaking dramas, love in 70 mm comes in all types and shapes. But Sujith Vaassudev calls his debut a ‘mature love story’, a film far from run-of-the-mill romances. “‘James and Alice is not a candyfloss love story, rather a family drama woven around a young couple. It’s basically a film that explores the depth of relationships,” he says about the Prithviraj-Vedhika starrer.

James and Alice is a tale torn off the busy metro life, strewn with situations people can easily relate to. “James, the hero, is a graduate in fine arts. He falls in love with Alice, the daughter of a planter and marries her. With time the young carefree couple become parents and their life totally changes with the arrival of their daughter. Now James works in an ad agency and Alice is a bank employee,” he explains the basic premise. Being an artist at heart, James feels like a fish-out-of-water in his present fast-paced life. “He is one of the individuals who are forced to sacrifice their passion for domesticity. The film shows how it changes him,” he adds.

Though James and Alice toys with a time-tested thread, it has a couple of elements to sustain the freshness quotient. “It’s not a plain, no-surprise narrative. James and Alice is a blend of romance, drama and suspense,” says Sujith. Apart from the leading duo Parvathy Nair, Sai Kumar, Kishore Sathya, Kalabhavan Shajon, Manju Pillai and Bijoy Varghese are also part of the cast.

“Another highlight of the film is the performance of Vedhika, who has beautifully essayed the role of Alice. Then Pinky, the child artist who plays her daughter, is quite a find. She will definitely woo the audience with her exceptional performance,” he adds.

Sujith says though the film is a total entertainer it leaves behind a trail of messages. “It’s the kind of film that makes you think,” he adds. James and Alice, produced by Dr S Sajikumar and Krishnan Sethukumar under the banner of Dharmik Films, hits the screens today.
