With a doting husband and darling daughter, Sarah’s life is picture perfect. But an unexpected turn of destiny spoils it all and suddenly she finds herself all alone. Zooming into the life of Sarah is Marupadi, V M Vinu’s upcoming film set in Kolkata. “It’s basically a revenge drama  inspired by a real life story. The basic premise is built on this incident that happened in a North Indian jail a couple of years back,”  says the director.

He says Marupadi has a woman-centric plot as it portrays the struggle of a sole woman against the system. “It’s the story of a woman, who is a victim as well as a fighter.” The film is woven around the couple Aby and Sarah settled in Kolkata. “They enjoy a blissful married life until an unfortunate incident wrecks havoc in their worlds. At one point she becomes a solitary fighter without any support system. How she revolts and fights against the unfair system forms the crux of the film,” he says. While Rahman and Bhama essay the roles of Aby and Sarah, Baby Nayanthara appears as their daughter Ria. “I wanted two actors who are not over-exposed in Malayalam. Rahman and Bhama fit the bill and the pairing  as well is fresh,” he says. Janardhanan who plays a former film producer along with Sathosh Keezhattoor, Devan, Surabhi, Valsala Menon and Tessa are also part of the cast.

It’s the quaint city of Kolkata that forms the backdrop of Marupadi. “Noted Bengali actor and theatre artist Sudhip Mukharjee is also part of the film. He plays the character of a jail superintendent,” he says. The film, produced by Ashraf Bedi under the banner of Bedi Motion Pictures, has gone on floors in Kannur.
