‘Ooh La La La’ (Tamil)

Director: AM Jothikrishna

Cast: A M Jothikrishna, Divya Bhandari, Thalaivasal Vijay, Rani, Pattimandram Raja, Shekhar Prasad, Kanja Karuppu

Director Jothikrishna’s third directorial venture, ‘Ooh La La La’ marks his debut as an actor. It traces the transformation of Surya from an immature, carefree youth with a distorted view of relationships, to a mature, sensible one. The character — irritable at times and likable at others — is performed with fair competence by Jothi.

The first half is all about the antics of Surya as he tries to pick up random girls. The youth’s whole idea of romance was to be seen with innumerable girlfriends around him, and spending a jolly time with them at cinema theaters and parks. Put off by his crude approaches, the girls tick him off. Yet, an idea strikes him. He would find a girlfriend, and then the other girls would swarm around him. Strange confused logic this!

Surya befriends Preeti and uses her to gain the attention of other girls. The ruse works. The earlier part is flippant and silly testing your patience at times. Subtlety is totally missing here.

The latter part turns into a more tolerable scenario, where the plot takes a serious turn with Jothi’s experiences teaching him the value of relationships. The director, who had introduced talents like Thamannah, Shreya and Ileana to the Tamil screen, introduces another promising debutant Divya Bhandari here. Looking chic in some trendy outfits, Divya has a pleasant screen presence.

Surya’s relationship with his parents generates some fun moments, with Thalaivasal Vijay and Rani fitting in suitably. The scene where Divya’s ill father (neat portrayal by Raja) sandwiched between Surya and his friend, is taken on a two-wheeler to the hospital (a la ‘3 idiots’), generates some laughs. The genuine fun moments, however, are few and far between.

The songs are stylishly picturised.

A passable entertainer, ‘Ooh La La La’ had the potential to turn into an engaging watch. If only the director had presented it with more polish and finesse.
